The Noble Duke of York
By Alfred H. Burne

Publisher: Staples Press (1949)

With access to the Royal archives, reports and correspondence, Burne has written a sympathetic account of the Life of York that goes some way to contradicting the unjust aspersions of York's detractors. His mediocre military performance in the field is more than balanced by his achievements as the most competent Commander-in-Chief in the long history of the British Army. His reforms, conducted without fanfare, completely transformed the Army and provided Wellington with a force fit to fight the wars with France (1793-1815).

Specification: pp 350 in 6" x 8½" case bound with dust cover and protective acetate clear wrap. The work includes plates and maps of military actions the Low Countries.

The Romance of Mathematics
By P. Hampson

Publisher: Elliot Stock (1886)

Reputed to have been written by a 'Lady Professor of Girtham College', this gem of a book is a strong argument for the advance of education for women. Published soon after the production of the G & S operetta 'Princess Ida' (1886), another strong promotion for women's rights, the author explores the social and political properties of conic sections; a clever and scholarly treatment of a pressing social issue.

Specification: Case bound pp 131 4½" x 7", this is a first edition of Hamson's book and, apart from a partial break in the binding between pp 32 and 33, is in excellent condition.
